CHANDIGARH: Indian Home Minister S.B. Chavan February 14 said the army and paramilitary forces would stay on in the strife torn Northern State of Punjab as long as necessary and there was no question of security arrangements being weakened in any manner after the elected government came to power. ‘Ata high level meeting held here to review the security arrangements for the coming elections in the State, Chavan said there was no question of polls being postponed and it would take place on February 19 as fixed by the Chief Election Commissioner.

‘Chavan expressed satisfaction with the arrangements being made for the conduct of the pols.

“The meeting was attended by State Governor Surendra Nath, adviser to the Governor LT Gen,. J.K Puri, Chief Secretary, etc. fielded heavy weights.

‘The PPCC(I) Chief, Beant Singh who previously contested from Payal has shifted this time to Jalandhar Cants in the Amritsar  (West) constituency again a clash of Giants is expected where the CPI candidate Mrs, Vimla Dang ‘and the Congress I leader Mr, Sewa Ram Arora fight it out

In all there are 582 aspirants for the Vidhan Sabha Seats and 81 for the Parliamentary seats, which is an all time Law of Contestants in the elections in the State.
