NEW DELHI(PTI): The army and authorities in India’s north eastern states have chalked out a new strategy, including infusion of more forces, to deal with deteriorating insurgency situation in the region,
A top level review of the worsening insurgency situation was held when the chief of army staff, Gen B.C.Joshi, accompanied by top army brass visited Assam, Nagaland and Manipur and held extensive discussion lo map out a comprehensive strategy to deal with recent spurt in activities by the banned Nagaland Nationalist Socialist Council (NSCN) and their ongoing battle with tribal Kuki national army.
Under the new strategy, the army and para military forces, working under a unified command, would be given more mobility and stationed at forward bases to deal with ongoing internecine clashes between NSCN and Kuki National Front and recent revival of activity by the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) and tribal Meitei dominated people’s liberation army of Manipur.
Recent spurt in the activities of all these insurgent organizations has been the fallout of withdrawal of key army units from Nagaland and Manipur to tackle militancy in Jammu and Kashmir. An entire eight mountain division, which is a specialized ant insurgency di vision, was moved to Kashmir over two years ago.
