SRINAGAR: Army moved in to maintain law and order in Srinagar and authorities withdrew curfew relaxation in the state capital and so pore on Thursday apprehending serious breach of peace while one person was killed and another abducted in Kashmir valley during the last 24 hours.

The troops have been deployed in sensitive areas of the city in view of a decision by members of the Shia community to take out a procession to mark Moharrum.

An official spokesman said militants attacked security forces in Rajourikadal, Gojwara and Nowhatta in Downtown city with automatic weapons, but no one was injured.

The spokesman said that the bullet riddled body of Jai Krishan Bhan of Dalhassanyar (Habbakadal) was found at Draibyar Karfali Mohalla around 1030 hours on Thursday.

Jawahar Lal of Pinglish village was abducted by some unknown persons from his residence in Tral, he said.

Ten suspected militants were arrested. Five of them were held in the border town of Kupwar, two each from Srinagar and So pore and one at Pulwama.

Two explosions partially damaged branch office of state Bank of India at Bhagat E Kanipora and the municipal building in Nishat.

The spokesman said some miscreants who attempted to set government high school Barthna on fire were prevented by the school Chowkidars and the local inhabitants,

Maulvi Umer Farooq, Mirwaiz of Kashmir has asked the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) currently in session in Cairo to find an enduring solution to the Kashmir problem.

“It is not a boundary dispute between India and Pakistan”, he stated requesting the OIC to send an observer team to Kashmir.

JAMMU: 22 people including six militants were killed in different incidents in the Kashmir valley overnight since Aug | while army personnel were deployed in strength near the security forces base.

Security arrangments were tightened following an attack on security forces Wednesday, official sources said.

The sources said army personnel were positioned near Palhalan near Baramullah in North Kashmir following an encounter between security personnel and militants in which seven persons were killed and 14 others injured. However, unofficial sources put the toll at ten.

Five militants were arrested in the five KM border belt between India and Pakistan during the period.

‘Wednesday’s attack near Palhalan comes in the wake of reports that militant outfits were planning to strike “in a big way” on security installations and personnel within in the next two weeks.

A report said trading activity came to a grinding halt in the summer capital, Srinagar following a strike observed in response to a call for protest against atrocities of security forces. The killing of the holy man comes in the wake of threats by some terrorist organisations. This is perhaps the first such incident of its kind in the history of the pilgrimage.

According to security force sources three bodies, believed to be those of militant killed in some encounter, were recovered in North Kashmir. According to the official spokesman, the bulletridden body of Wali Mohd Mir was recovered from Kupwara.

An official spokesman said some militants Wednesday fired at Pathan in North Kashmir at a convoy of security force vehicles moving towards Baramulla and in the resulting exchange of fire seven persons were killed.
