SRINAGAR: The army was called out Tuesday in parts of Kashmir, where violence left seven people dead overnight.

In other incidents militants tried to blow up a government guest house in the security zone of Sonawar Tuesday and security forces arrested 24 suspected militants during searches in the Kashmir valley, an official spokesman said.

He said an explosive device was found behind the government guest house at Sonawar Tuesday. It was defused by the bomb disposal squad.

In Kupwara district, a militant was killed in an encounter with the security forces Tuesday while three others died in a shootout in Heral-Handwara with the authorities forces Monday night, official sources said here.

Haji Ghulam Mohammad Ganai, a well-known businessman and activist of outlawed Jamaat-E-Islami, was shot dead by militants while he was returning home from a mosque late Monday.

An unidentified person was killed in cross fire between militants and security forces in Bandipur town in Baramulla district Tuesday, the sources said.
