BOMBAY: The army was called out in Bombay last week to calm tensions after a leader of India’s main opposition Hindu Bharaitya Janata Party (BJP) was gunned down by an assassin on a Muslim holiday. A police spokesman said around 3,000 soldiers had been deployed in Muslim dominated areas of the city, Moumers marched in a funeral procession behind a truck carry ing Sharma’s body through the streets of his south Bombay constituency, accompanied by police. Streets of Muslim dominated areas were deserted. Sporadic incidents of violence were reported as the “Shiv Sena” leader ‘BAL Thackeray” promised to avenge the murder of Sharma.
