NEW DELHI: India’s hockey captain Pargat Singh fresh from victory in the Azlan trophy tournament in Ipoh has yet another good thing coming.
The ace full back has been given the Arjuna award the highest recognition given by the government for excellence in sports for the year 1989.
An official announcement here Friday evening lists 11 other sportspersons besides Pargat Singh for their outstanding performances in their respective disciplines. They are: Shyam Lal (Archery) Mercy Kuttan (athletics) Yasin Merchant (billards and snooker) Gopal Dewang (boxing) Madan Lal (cricket) Subroto Bhattacharjee (football) Krupali Patel (gymnastics) Niyati Shah (nee roy) (table tennis) Abdul Basith (volleyball) Jyotsna Dutta (weightlifting) and Satyawan (wrestling).
It was a hat-trick for Delhi University which claimed the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad trophy for best all round performance for the year 1989-90.
The department of youth affairs and sports has not given the Dronacharya award for outstanding coaches for the year 1989.
The awards will be presented at a later date. The Arjuna award consists of cash award of Rs 20000 a bronze Statute of legendary warrior Arjuna and a ’scroll.
