NEW DELHI: To ward off a new threat to the Chander Shekhar Government, law Minister Subramanium Swamy hinted in the Lok Sabha at the possibility of amending the anti-defection law to deprive the Speaker of the power to declare a member disqualified and entrust this power to the President of India, The Lok Sabha Speaker Rabi Ray on Jan 7 gave an opportunity to 35 members including the Deputy Prime Minister Devi Lal to show cause why they should not be disqualified as members of the lower house for defying the whip issued by the V.P. Singh led  Janata Dal some time ago. The ruling group appears to be doing everything possible to prevent the declaration of the members disqualified in terms of the anti-defection law.
