BALTIMORE,MD: In a well-reasoned summary decision, the Immigration and Naturalization Service Judge, Hon. John J. Mc Carrick, granted asylum and with-holding of deportation to Gurmit Singh on his claim of persecution on account of his religion, political opinion and membership of “AISSF” (All India Sikh Student Federation).
Singh, 33, from Punjab, India, came without proper documents in Dec.1991, and was detained by INS. He remained in jail until the grant of asylum to him, INS waived appeal.
This case may have impact on hundreds of pending and future Sikh asylum cases. Singh was represented by Attorney Harnam S. Arneja, who is perhaps the only Sikh Attorney with a turban in Washington Metropolitan area.
