Former Congressman Stephen Solara has been a staunch sup porter of the Indian Government at the Capitol Hill. He has de fended Indian Government’s human rights record in Punjab and Kashmir and has justified the suppression of Sikhs and Muslims in India. He has been to India many times but has failed to pay attention to problems of non-Hindu Indians. As head of the House Sub Committee on Asian and Pacific Affairs, he has prevented any hearings or serious discussions criticizing India. He also propagates the inclusion of India into the Security Council at the United Nations.
His appointment as U.S. Ambassador to India will be a serious blow to the human rights movement and to the interests of Sikhs and other minorities in India.
