The Honorable Senators Pell and Moynihan United States Senate
Washington, D.C. 20510
June 22, 1993
Dear Senator Claiborne Pell & Senator Daniel Moynihan,
We are shocked to learn that President Clinton is considering Stephen J.Solarz to be the next U.S, Ambassador India, and Stephen J.Solarz as a Congressman worked more for India than for U.S. interests. In his letter to the Indians in America in July 1991 he boasted that as a result of his efforts India received $2 billion in US. Stance. He also made it clear that it was in the best interest of Indians to support him in order to neutralize Pakistan and (in the U.S.) Chinese interests.
Mr. Solarz was also one of the top tanking members in the named Senate bank scandal. He overdrew close to 700 checks and in the election campaign he blamed this on his wife.
‘The Indian subcontinent is a very unstable part of the world. To send a person like Mr. Solarz will make it “More unstable, He has been working almost as a lobbyist for India for several years. The appointment as U.S. Ambassador to India will send a very negative message about the U.S. to Pakistan, China and several peoples within India, such as Sikhs and Kashmiris.
‘Moreover American people in his own district rejected him in the last election because of his performance. To override their decision would be a great insult to the American people. President Clinton and U.S. Senate should be sensitive to the wishes of the American people.
We strongly urge the members of the Foreign Relations Senate Committee and full Senate to reject.
“Mr Solarz appointment when more qualified and better candidates are available. Sincerely,
NOTE: We urge our readers to use this as a sample to send to the appropriate Senators. This is your opportunity to let your voices be heard. A list of the members of the Committee is noted below.
