Human rights abuse occur to all everywhere in the world, And the situation for women is critical.
Murder, torture, rape, moulation beatings, unjustified imprisonment and more happen to women, Why?
Because women are less able to defend themselves. Because women are related to suspected
men. Because women frequently have less legal and social status in their countries.
Sometimes in the past. human rights abuses to men have got more publicity. There has been a greater effort to stop them, hasn’t right, I’m sure you’ll agree, Amnesty is committed to working for men and Women all people, equally.
We’ve worked hard to have a Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women appointed by the UN Commission of Human Rights. I’m pleased to tell you that the appointment came through on March 4 Radhika Coomaraswamy from Sri Lanka is now hard at work.
But women are still at risk, The Fourth UN World Conference on Women is to be held a year
from this September in Beijing, China.
So far governments have consistently failed to address women’s human rights – indeed women are frequently made particularly/vulnerable to human rights violations by the policies of their own governments.
There must be vast improvements to protect women’s human rights by the Beijing conference, Governments must act. And they will if millions of women and men around the world demand it.
Women are at risk Right now. As you read this, we, you and I, must act to protect them now. Thank you,
