KATHMANDU: King Birendra’s of Nepal has granted amnesty to all religious prisoners in view of the new political environment obtaining in Nepal, a Hindu kingdom.

A royal palace notification said the amnesty was granted to 62 prisoners on the advice of Prime Minister Krishan Prasad Bhattarai and in accordance with the Nepal constitution.

The king gave instructions for dismissal of all cases against persons awaiting trial for religious activities.

These religious prisoners were held on the charges of alleged conversion.
