NEW YORK: Amnesty International called on the government of India on July 18 to account for seven people who “disappeared” in police custody in 1989 and 1988.
The human rights organization said that dozens of people had apparently vanished in India in recent years after being picked up by police officials.
Although Indian law has safeguards against unreported lengthy detentions, the protection is rarely applies, according to Amnesty.
In preparing its report, Amnesty International sought to send a Indian government.
In the report issued Tuesday in London, Amnesty said it feared that the seven victims whose cases it details may have been killed in custody.
