Edinburgh, Scotland — A man has been charged in the shooting deaths of two soldiers and a retired army officer in an army payroll robbery near Edinburgh, police said today.

Police refused to name the man but said a report lay been submitted to Scotland’s public prosecutor.

A man has been arrested and charged with the murders,’’ a police spokesman in Edinburgh said. “We can make no further statement on the case, but we are still asking for witnesses to come forward.”

The three men, who had been carrying an army payroll of $19,040 to a local barracks, were killed Thursday and their bodies found near a deserted cottage near Penicuik, about 10 miles south of Edinburgh, police said.

Police later said they were looking for a soldier or a man impersonating a soldier because witnesses reported a man in uniform running from the area.
