CHANDIGARH; Senior Akali Dal (Badal) leader and candidate assembly constituency and six militants were among 15 persons killed overnight June 1.
Akali Dal (Badal) candidate Dalbir Singh Ranike was shot dead while campaigning in his constituency.
His brother Mr Balkar Singh who was attached with him as his gunman was seriously wounded by militants in village Muse in Amritsar district.
Election to the Attari assembly seat in Amritsar district has been countermanded. With this 13 candidates have been killed by the militants so far resulting in countermanding of elections in 16constituencies one Lok Sabha constituency of Ludhiana and 15 assembly constituencies In addition one candidate had died of heart failure.
However a new poll schedule has already been notified for the one Lok Sabha and 11 assembly constituencies where the election had been countermanded.
Police arrested five militants of the Khalistan Commando Force (Zafarwal) Friday night in the Ajnala sector of the Majitha police district.
Their arrest led to a seizure of a large catch of sophisticated arms and ammunition from a specially built cavity of a tractor-cumtrolley coming from the border village of Ballarwal in Ajnala sector in Majitha police district. The weapons were concealed in a cavity built beneath the floor of the trolley.
