AGRA: Ahmed Ali Khan alias Sher Khan a notorious character of Agra who is facing charges in more than 25 criminal cases has been nominated chairman of Indian Jute Development Council (UDC).

Khan’s nomination was announced by the Union Ministry of Agriculture. The vice chairman’s post has gone to the Agriculture Commissioner with his office at Krishi Bhavan New Delhi.

But it is Ahmed Ali Khan’s sudden elevation to the post of chairman that has irked a large section of Agra’s population including the local Congress and the police. Some Congressmen met the Prime Minister to “protest” Khan’s nomination.

Khan’s name entered the police records in 1971 when he was allegedly caught with a wireless set and charged with espionage. One of the recent cases registered against him was in February 1991 under the Arms Act.

The police of Agra and Etah booked Khan for various offences murder and attempt to murder On May 131989 the police records show a Matador van stacked with liquor bottles was seized from his house at 56 Takkar Road

In fact Khans house at Takkar Road has been built on land grabbed by him claim the police. His name also figures in several other cases of land-grabbing registered by them.

A few other cases (out of a total of 27) implicate Khan in one crime or the other.
