MOSCOW, Oct 22, Reuter: Afghan President Najibullah announced on Saturday the creation of ‘a ministry for Islamic affairs, Tass News Agency reported from Kabul.

Najibullah made the announcement during an international conference on Islam attended by representatives of 25 countries, including the United States and the Soviet Union.

Analysts said the moves was part of Kabul’s peace overtures to Moslem Rebels, who have so far rejected participation in any coalition government and say they will fight until Najibullah is toppled.

Tass also said the military situation remained tense in much of Afghanistan. In the past week, over 530 people had been killed or wounded in battles in Kandahar, Kunduz, Paktia and Herat provinces.
