HYDERABAD: The BJP President, L.K. Advani called for firm action in dealing with the Kashmir situation as “no soft action” would solve the vexed problem and “meddling by Pakistan.”
At a press conference, Advani said the situation in Kashmir was “‘pretty bad” and that all talks for recall of the governor Jag mohan and reviving the assembly should be stopped.
Jagmohan whose removal the Congress I has been demanding needed support from all quarters as he was dealing with a “very difficult situation” he added.
Jagmohan was appointed governor of Kashmir late last year following which the national front chief minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah resigned protesting that the National Front government had not consulted him on the appointment.
Coming down heavily on the Congress I for criticising the V.P. Singh government on the handling of the Kashmir problem, Advani said when it (Congress I) was in power it did not do anything.
Advani said that besides Kashmir and Punjab, the situation in Assam was also causing concern as the activities of ULFA were continuing “unabated” creating a reign of terror among people, especially outsiders who were living in the state for a number of years. There were also allegations that a section of the “ruling party had been mixed up with these elements,” he said.
