JALANDHAR; Ms. Shabana Azmi, noted film actress, accused the Government of willfully delaying 4 solution of the Punjab problem with an eye on elections.
Addressing a function organized by the Hind Samachar group ‘of newspapers to give relief to the families of victims of violence here she said that a solution of the problem could be found if the Government and the political parties Were sincere. She said: “It was not the time to watch wounds of the people and remaining silent spectators. Had the demands been taken up on behalf of the people the Situation would not have been what it was today.”
Ms. Azmi called upon the people to untidily defend Punjab and Panjabiat… Referring to Rajiv Gandhi’s offer for talks to militants if they gave up violence, MS. Azmi said this also applied on the Government. It was the responsibility of the Government to punish persons responsible for the Delhi riots. These people should be given the same punishment which had been awarded to the killers of Mrs. Indira Gandhi.
