SWANSEA, WALES: (U.K) In the world of Elvis impersonators its not enough to master the kings hips and lips. To be different and get noticed as Elvis, you got a have a gimmick. Peter Singh 42, a resident of the city is one who is believed to be the world’s only Sikh Elvis impersonator.
Peter Singh, has toured England and Kenya where he is a hit with the large Sikh community in the city of Mombasa. His group consists of five turbaned Welsh Sikhs and together they sing such Elvis treasurers like “Blue Suede Shoes” “Little Sister”, and “Teddy Bear”. He also sings his own numbers like “My Popadum told me” “Turbans over Memphis” and “Elvis, I’m on the phone.”
A typical lyric of his: I don’t smoke dope, I don’t drink bourbon.
All wanna do is shake my turbanPeter Singh, who has sold over 1,000 copies of “Blue Suede Shoes” says “people just love to see a guy in a beard and turban doing rock and roll.” Talking of King he said, “I respect the king and will until the day I die. There will never be another Elvis” and added, “there will never be another rock in Sikh.”
