HYDERABAD: An uneasy calm prevailed in the First Lancers’ area here following the attempt made by a group of Army men to construct a wall at Old Idgah last week.

The construction was stalled when hundreds of local residents protested against the move, The Armymen, who had initially insisted on the construction as they had got the orders from their higher ups, postponed their plans for a week after State Minister for Waaf and Minority Affairs Bashecruddin Babu Khan and a few legislators from the city rushed to the site to convince the: officials that the land belonged to the’ Idgah and was property of the Wagt Board. They pointed out that 15,046 square yards of land was allotted to the Wagf Board by the Government on December 29, 1988 through an’ official gazette.

The intervention of senior police’ officials finally led to the Amymen calling off their attempts to build the! wall for the present, at least.

The mob which had gathered at the! site even began digging the foundation for the construction of their own wall to protect the Wagfland.
