NEW DELHI: Former Indian President Neelam Sanjiva Reddy died of pneumonia. A farmer’s son, he rose to become India’s president in 1977, He retired from active politics in 1983 after his presidential term expired, Reddy was president at a time when Indian politics was in turmoil, He was respected both by the ruling Congress and opposition leaders because of his conciliatory nature, He was in the forefront of India’s struggle for independence from Britain. India became independent in 1947. He died of pneumonia in a Bangalore hospital according to his physician.
