CHANDIGARH: Mr, Justice K.S Aggarwal of the Punjab and Haryana High Court last week, issued notice to the home secretary and SSP of Ludhiana on a petition filed by Jagtar Singh Hawara, the prime accused in the Beant Singh assassination case for February 2, 1996.

The petition was moved by Mr. Navkiran Singh and Mr, Harshinder Singh, counsels for the accused, who brought to the notice of the high court that Jagtar Singh Hawara was being implicated in false criminal cases by the Punjab State and at present the Ludhiana police is obtaining remands in the absence of the accused or his counsel, Even the magistrates are not ensuring the presence of the counsels on the dates, The action of the police, it was contended, was unconstituuonal.

A petition filed in the high court for quashing the FIR registered against Mr. Simranjit Singh Mann, president of Shiromani Akali Dal, Amritsar, was last week, dismissed as withdrawn.

Mr. Ranjan Lakhanpal, counsel for the petitioner, contended that Mr. Mann was falsely accused of delivering a subversive and antinational Speech at Isrohu, district Khanna, and an FIR under Sections 124-A and 153-A LPC was registered at the Sadar police station, Khanna. The counsel further contended that FIR was registered primarily because of Mr Mann’s political affiliation.
