Dear Colleague;
I am writing to invite you to sign on to the attached letter urging President Clinton to assume an active diplomatic role in resolving the crisis in Khalistan.
Since the Indian government attack on the Golden Temple in 1984 over 110,000 Sikhs have been killed by Indian security forces. More than 70,000 Sikhs languish in Indian jails without charge or trial under laws condemned as “disturbing” and “completely unacceptable” by the United Nations Human Rights Commission.
International human rights organizations such as Amnesty International have been barred from Khalistan but according to the Congressional Research Service reports of widespread use of torture staged killings and rampages by army and paramilitary forces have been well documented.
The United States can no longer ignore India’s violations of internationally recognized human rights. We must intervene diplomatically to end the misery in Khalistan. I hope that you will join me by signing this important letter and bringing about a peaceful solution to this crisis.
Sincerely
Gary A. Condit Member of Congress
