Girija Prasad Koirala on Nov.21 resigned as Prime Minister while his Nepali Congress Party inched forward in the electoral race, winning 79 seats, seven behind the Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxist-Leninist).

As the other minor political groups, whose support is crucial in any government making in a hung Parliament undecided on who to go with, there were indications that the Nepali Congress might try to knit a coalition and skate acclaim to form a government. Of the 198 constituencies where results declared, the pro monarchy National Democratic Party (NDP) has bagged 20 seats, the Leftist Nepal Peasants and Laborers Party (NPLP) four, the ethnic Nepal Sadbhavana Party three and Independents six. After the surprise reversal his Congress Party suffered in the midterm Hastings, Koirala Monday met King Birendra at the Royal Palace and submitted his resignation.
