PATIALA: The Punjab police chief, K.P.S. Gill, has had his way. The Punjab Government has finally approved his proposal to send Punjab police commandos to Assam to deal with the problem of militancy there.

‘The state government has also okayed the proposal to send Punjab police commandos to Andhra Pradesh to counter the activities of Naxalites groups operating in North Telengana.

Official sources said here Oct.14 that the First Commando Battalion of the Punjab police would leave for Assam and the Third Commando Battalion would be sent to Andhra Pradesh. The commandos in Assam would cooperate under L.R. Yaday, a senior officer of the BSF on deputation with the Punjab police for the past many years.

The sources said the commandos were scheduled to leave for Assam on Oct.25 by rail. Apart from to officers, 1000 jawans and non-gazette officials comprised the Assam bound battalion, the battalion would be moving along with its vehicles and sophisticated weapons including bulletproof tractors.
