NEW DELHI: Moscow has quietly wound up the Soviet Land Nehru Award and has also closed down the 44-yr-old fortnightly publication this month. The award was launched in honor of the late Jawaharlal Nehru in 1965. Its recipients include R. Venkataraman, Satyajit Ray, Raj Kapoor, Nargis, Shabana Azmi, V.R. Krishna lyer, Mrinal Sen, Amitabh Bachhan and others.
The Soviet Land, published in English and 14 other Indian languages, has closed down with the last issue early this month. Earlier Moscow stopped Soviet Review, an ideological monthly, Spumik Jr, a children’s magazine and News and Views from the Soviet Union, a cyclostyled daily release for small Newspapers. Moscow has also withdrawn its Patronage of such friendship organizations as pro-C.P.I. ISCUS and pro-Congress (I) friends of the Soviet Union.
