NEW DELHI: Functions in various parts of the world and in, particular India marked the 523d birth anniversary of the first Gun of the Sikhs, Guru Nanak Devji.
Religious hymns and Sikh scriptures were recited in Gurdwaras (Sikh places of worship) and thousands of devotees thronged Shrines to pay tributes o the Guru who preached love and advocated universal equality.
Colorful processions were taken out on the eve of Guru Nanak Devji’s birth an anniversary and Akhand paths, held in all Gurdwaras.
The Indian president, vice president and prime minister have in separate messages called upon people to follow the teachings of Guru Nanak.
A congregation was held at a Gurdwara in the capital where speakers advocated a political solution to the Punjab problem.
In Stockton, local Sikhs gathered in strength to host a redecorated Nishan Sahib.
By far the largest celebration in Northern California was at Fremont in the San Francisco Bay Area. Thousands gathered to celebrate not only the Gurpurab but also for the long awaited inauguration of the new Diwan Hall.
Mayor of Fremont William Ball and Dr. Mayor John Dutra graced the occasion and were honored with plaques of the Sri Harmandir Sahib.
Among the speakers after the religious ceremonies was Bhai Satinderpal Singh, member Panthic Committee, Dr. Amarjit, Singh, spokesman Panthic Commie, Bhai Kehar Singh, Bhai Dhanna Singh, Bhai Gurmej Singh of W.S.O.
