NEW DELHI: Security arrangements for Indian Prime Minister, PV Narasimha Rao, during his campaign for the November 6byelections will come in for close “study and scrutiny” by the Verma commission as part of is probe to detect the security lapses that led to the assassination of Congress-I President Rajiv Gandhi earlier this year.
Indian Supreme Court justice J.S. Verma heading the one man commission directed its security adviser, A .P Bhatnagar, to take immediate steps for conducting the study and submit report to the commission.
Verma’s detection followed a suggestion by the commission counsel, Gopal Subramaniam, that such a study would fall within the terms of reference which require the commission to recommend corrective measures and remedies in security arrangements for polities leaders
Justice Verma said the study could also include security arrangement for former prime ministers and the leader of the opposition in parliament during the current campaign for the by elections. “The commission directed Bhamagar to make a study the security systems prescribed, required said and operated at present for these leaders besides taking note of the changes introduced since Gandhi’s assassination.
