NEW DELHI: The total foreign exchange deposits held by nonresident Indians (NRIS) amounted to Rs 207.27 billion the Lok Sabha was told on Friday.

Minister of state for finance Rameshwar Thakur said these deposits were composed of foreign currency non-resident accounts (FCNR) which are denominated in dollars pound sterling Deutschemark or Japanese Yen.

WB Loan:

The Indian government is considering a Rs 5.050 billion world bank aided drinking water supply project for Madras city and surrounding areas.

The project prepared by the Tamil Nadu government is expected to be funded by World Bank with Rs three billion urban development minister Sheila Kaul told parliament.

She said the project would make available 400 million liters of water daily from the Krishna River in terms of the agreement between the states of Tamil Nadu Andhra Pradesh Karn Karnataka and Maharashtra.

LAW: The government has received representations for a change in the Christian personal law pertaining to marriage divorce succession and adoption the minister of state for law PR Kumaramangalam said.

The minister said it would be possible for the government to take a decision on the issue involved only after ascertaining the views of the Christian community.

The policy of the government was to introduce amendment in personal law relating to any minority community only when the concerned people agreed to the same or a demand was made by that community he said
