NEW DELHI: Congress-I govt is committed to set up Prasar Bharati (broadcast corporation) and to introduce competition in the electronic media, deputy information and broadcasting minister Girija Vyas informed the upper house (Rajya Sabha): Thursday,
She said in a written reply that the possibility of bringing out suitable amendments in the act, particularly in the context of introducing competition in the electronic media could not be ruled out.
She said preparatory work leading to establishment of the Prasar Bharati and for introduction of competition had commenced.
President Ramaswamy Venkataraman gave his assent in September 1990 to the Prasar Bharati bill introduced in the lower house in December 1989.
She added that most of the activities essential to the formal establishment of the corporation had not been completed.
Vyas, in a written reply to another ion said there was no proposal under consideration of the govt for Setting up more channels in national television.
She added that the introduction of second channel in cities other than the four metropolis depended upon availability of resources after the finalization of the eighth plan.
