NEW DELHI: The Prime Minister Mr P.V. Narasimha Rao assured the people that his government was committed to protect the interests of the minorities and announced the setting up of a composite rapid action force (RAC) to quell communal riots. Special Courts be constituted to try communal offences and the Minorities Commission will be given statutory status to enhance its effectiveness.
In his first address to the nation after assuming office as the country’s ninth Prime Minister Rao spoke about his govt’s determination to deal with the economic crisis in a decisive manner tackle law and order problems with single-mindedness remove impediments in the way of rapid industrialization give an added boost to agriculture and strive relentlessly to create employment quality
We will ensure that the unity and integrity of the country are safeguarded. While genuine grievances of the people will be redressed terrorism and other fissiparous tendencies will be dealt with firmly Rao said. Focusing on the economic crisis faced by the country the Prime Minister observed we must tighten our belts and be prepared to make necessary sacrifices to preserve our economic independence which is an integral part of our vision for a strong nation.
BUDGET IN A MONTH; seeking the cooperation of all in this national endeavor Rao announced that the postponed Union Budget will be presented in a month. He maintained that India shall maintain its unblemished and perfect record in meeting its international obligations. The dialogue with the multilateral financial institutions in particular the International Monetary Fund would be continued he said.
Rao underlined the need to manage the balance of payments situation and curb inflation. At the same time it would be the govt’s endeavor to ensure that the process of adjustment is managed in such a manner that it protects the poor and sustains the momentum of growth. REMOVING COBWEBS: On industrialization he said the cobwebs in this regard would be removed. We will work towards making India internationally competitive taking full advantage of modern science and technology and the opportunities offered by evolving global economy. Utmost efficiency will be fostered.
He cautioned against waste inefficiency and indifference to quality in the Public or any other sector.
