NEW DELHI: It may be a hung parliament again notwithstanding impressive gains made by Congress (I) in Madhya Pradesh Rajasthan and Orissa according to a poll analyst.
For the gains made in these three states ruled by BJP and Janata Dal may be partially offset by losses in Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh says Dr G Bala chandran.
PTI-MODI Olivetti computer projections based on trends from over 400 of the 511 eleven seats where counting began June 17 indicate that Congress (I) may finish with a final tally of 215-220 seals—more than the 197 it got in 1989 but still short of 256 needed for an absolute majority.
Even with its allies AIADMK in Tamil Nadu and Janata Dal (G) in Gujarat and UDF partners in Kerala the Congress (I)is unlikely to reach the magic figure as its partners cannot make up the short fall of 35-4seats he says.
But Congress (I) may be able to salvage its position somewhat if the 65 odd constituencies in Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh which went to the polls after the assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi change the trend.
