CHANDIGARH: Former Punjab assembly speaker and senior Congress-I leader Brij Bhushan Mehra and his driver were shot dead and his gunman seriously wounded by militants at Amritsar on Monday.

Mehra was accorded a state funeral here on June 4.

Seven suspected militants, including an independent candidate, were also arrested in the stale during the period, police said.

Militants shot dead Mehra and his driver, Prem Singh, and injured his gunman Mohinder Pal, near the Congress-I leaders’ factory on the Batala Road at Amritsar Monday.

The militants fired with AK-47 rifles at the car when Mehra was proceeding to his factory, an Amritsar report said.

Meanwhile, five close relatives of a Sikh religious leader, Joga Singh of Tarna Dal, were killed in village Jamalpur in Amritsar, The victims were the father, mother-in-law, two daughters and a brother-in-law of the Baba.
