AHMEDABAD: Premier Chandra Shekhar Saturday said there was a risk in holding election in Punjab under the present circumstances but it was a “risk worth taking”.

The prime minister said polls in the state should not be avoided for long on the plea of law and order problem as 90% of the states’ population who are opposed to violence would go against us if their right to vote is withheld for long.

Addressing an election campaign meeting for his Samajwadi Janata Party (SJP) he called for solution to Punjab problem by dialogues.

The problem in the state was created by the majority government at the center which failed to convince people following the wrong path to join the mainstream he said.

Elections in the border state which has been under president’s rule for the past five years will be held in June the Congress-I who opposed holding of polls in the state has decided to boycott them.
