COLOMBO: Sri Lankan minister of state for defense Ranjan Wijeraine was assassinated Saturday morning when a powerful bomb ripped through his motorcade killing some of his security personnel also.
The bomb exploded when Wijcratne’s convoy passed through Havelock Road in central Colombo at 0830 local time.
A few people traveling in a bus nearby were also reportedly killed when the bomb exploded.
The explosion rocked the entire area and damaged several shops and buildings.
Sources here said the blast was probably caused by a remote control landmine.
Wijeratne who was the plantation minister had been responsible for containing activities in the Islan state since he assumed charge a5 minister of state for defence in the last two years.
