NEW DELHI: India Jan 17 geared up to meet steps to meet any eventuality including a possible energy crisis.

The union cabinet at.an emergency meeting decided on the measures to tackle the situation. Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar is also meeting state chief ministers and opposition leaders Thursday to consider the effect of the war on India and the measures to be taken to tackle the situations.

President R. Venkataraman cut short his three day visit to West Bengal and returned to the capital in view of the outbreak of hostilities in West Asia.

Even as the prime minister appealed to the people to be restrained in the use of petrol a contingency plan has been drawn up by the union coal department to substitute kerosene and LPG with coal keeping in view probable energy shortage due to the gulf war .

Oil experts here say that the government might soon announce a contingency plan for oil conservation though the gulf war may not have an immediate harsh impact on the country’s oil position as there is enough stock for 45 days.

In the capital security for diplomatic missions has been beefed up in view of the gulf war.
