BELJING(PTI): Five people, including two women, convicted in embezzlement cases, were executed Nov.27, two days after Premier Li Peng called for “deepening the anticorruption struggle nationwide so as to live up to people’s expectations.
Two women in southwest China’s Kunming city used their positions in a foodstuffs company and a meat processing plant to steal meat and sell it, embezzling a total of 3.74 million yuan (about 60,000 dollars), in what was described as the biggest such case since 1949.
Three men, an accountant in a textile firm in east China’s Fujian province, an employee in the Shenzhen special economic zone and a jobless exconviet in east China’s Zhejiang province were also convicted and executed for embezzling sums exceeding one million yuan (about 18,000 dollars).
A woman cashier involved in the Zhejiang case was sentenced to death with two years’ probation.
The convictions followed Thursday’s remarks by premier Li at a forum on anticorruption struggle attended by several top party and state leaders that some units remained weak in their work.
