The hardliners took over. He also referred to the charge of deceit and betrayal against his party and said: “he believed us and we believed our workers but we were also betrayed in that sense and now we realize it was a miscalculation.” In what observers believe to be the most subtle defence of his party Vajpayee stated on the issue whether the masjid should be built on the same place that it should not be built there. It should be built somewhere else while Mandir should be built at the site of the masjid. Vajpayee said that “Mandir is already there may be a make shift Mandir.”
