NEW DELHI: A Delhi Police constable fired twice from his rifle to halt the progress of an errant TSR driver who had strayed onto the route of the Presidents scheduled motorcade near the Shivaji stadium bus Stop.
While there were no bullet induced injuries the driver sustained deep gashes on his forehead when his scooter toppled over and Crashed against the divider after the shots were fired.
The police later said that the intention was not to hurt and claimed that the shots were fired in the air only after repeated verbal warnings had proved futile. It was also pointed out that both driver Shamsher Singh and his Passen8er-friend Harpal Singh were under the influence of alcohol. The 5.20 p.m incident occurred about the same time the President Dr.S.D.Sharma was scheduled to pass by after attending the Nehru Cup closing ceremony at Shivaii Stadium.
