NEW DELHI: There is no end to speculation in Indian media as to why Punjab police K.P.S.Gill missed the Kashmir bus. There was a proposal to appoint him either govemor or directorgeneral of Kashmir. Earlier, it was thought that the Indian army which does not see eye to eye with Gill ever since his support to Sumedh Saini in the tussle with the army puts its foot down on the Kashmir appointment. Later, it was revealed that the Kashmir chief secretary and several other senior officers had threatened to resign their posts if Gill was sent to that state, now comes a picce by a leading Indian columnist G.S.Bhargva claiming that what proved counterproductive for Gill was his tendency to plant stories in newspapers brightening his own image. Bhargva did not say who disliked this tendency and why. It is, however, well known that most Chandigarh and Punjab journalists covering police are Gill’s admirers. Gill has grown so powerful that he decides which journalist to transfer from Chandigarh and which one to be retained in the state’s capital.
