NEW YORK (PTI): A top Pakistani official has called for solution to the vexed Kashmir issue which has been a major irritant in Indo Pak relations on the basis of the United Nations charter and resolutions. Addressing a Press conference Oct.29 a day after Pakistan was elected on the Security Council for a two year term beginning January one next secretary general of Pakistan foreign ministry Akram Zaki said India and Pakistan are engaged in a constructive and meaningful dialogue.”
He disagreed with a Pakistani correspondent suggestion that Islamabad was reluctant to raise the issue in the council.
Pakistan’s membership of the council Zaki said would not make a difference in this respect for one could raise the issue in the security council or general assembly or any other organ of the United Nations whether one was a member of the council or not.
As a member of the council Pakistan had to consider the overall interest of the international community and so far as Pakistan’s point of view is concerned it will be reflected” he said.
Asked whether Pakistan would support sending a fact finding mission to Kashmir Zaki said if the United Nations secretary general proposes such a mission “we will support it.”
