Dear Editor,

I am writing in response to Mr.Ravinder S.Bhalla’s letter 10 the editor (WSN 8/2/93) concerning United States House of Representatives candidate, Mr. Neil Dhillon. I, along with many other Sikhs across the United States, disagree with Mr.Bhalla’s viewpoint.

First, I must explain that Mr.Bhalla, in his early 20’s, is a junior/senior at the University of California, Berkeley. I do not doubt his intelligence but do question his experience and understanding of American politics.

Mr. Dhillon is a candidate for the United States Congress and will be representing people who live in the United States. His agenda encompasses jobs and a strong economy for his district, civil rights, women’s right to choose, and human rights.

Please allow me to expand on the issue of human rights. Mr. Dhillon has always stated that he be leaves that many human rights abuses occur across the Indian subcontinent and the world. He also believes that independent agencies must be able to conduct autonomous investigations wherever human rights abuses transpire. Mr. Dhillon has declared that he would be one to carry legislation on the floor of the House of Representatives which affect us and our families.

As you may know, our Sikh community is divided on the issue of Khalistan. The creation of a Sikh nation must be decided by Sikhs who live there. This week’s peace accord between Israel and the Palestinians demonstrates the importance of compromise and smart negotiations, and the promise that peace can be achieved.

Mr.Bhalla’s accusation that Mr. Dhillon is not a true Sikh is insulting to me and illustrates Mr.Bhalla’s petty biases toward persons who disagree with his viewpoint.

In response to Mr.Bhalla’s request to the World Sikh News regarding their coverage for Mr. Dhillon, I hope that you will continue to provide unbiased information and allow your readers to arrive at their own conclusions.

Sikhs came to the United States in search of a better life for themselves and their children. Please do not allow Mr.Bhalla’s trivial words to diminish the potential for our community with Mr. Dhillon, a Punjabi Sikh, in the United States House of Representatives. Mr. Dhillon has taken an enormous risk by resigning as Deputy Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of Transportation to run for the United States Congress. He is a role model for every person of Indian descent, and we all must be very proud of him.
