WASHINGTON(PTD: The US., giving up & major plan to hive is own independent space station, hats agreed to jointly conduct experiments in space with the Russians, heralding a new era of cooperation between the two giants of Space research.

Agreements on space coopera Hon, initialed on Sept.3 by U.S. vice president Al Gore and Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chemomyrdin, provide for merging the U.S. and Russian manned Space programs, with the Americans initially to share the use of Russian space Station “Mir.”

The U.S.Russian plan for a joint space station, with parts manufactured by both the U.S. and Russia, should, be in orbit by the year 2000.

The agreement dwarfs anything done before, including the joint Apollo Soyuz mission of 1975.

Two veterans of that mission, American Tom Stafford and Russia’s Alexei Leonov, present at Friday’s signing ceremony, were recognized by Gore amid cheers.
