LUCKNOW: A lightning strike by inmates of the Luck now district jail in support of the deputy jailor N.N. Shivastava, arrested under TADA, on the charge of helping four Punjab militants escape from the jail and the refusal of the Secretary (Finance), C.K. Sharma to replace another, IAS officer Rajendra Bhonwal as Inspector General of Prisons has put the UP Government in an embarrassing position. The government had transferred Sharma to affect a major overhaul of the jail administration following the sensational jail break. Bhonwal had expressed doubts about the UP police claim that Shrivastava had accepted a bribe of Rs 10 lakhs to enable the militants to escape Sharma, however, obtained a stay order from the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), against his posting as IG (Prisons), on health grounds.
