NEW DELHI(PTI): On Aug,27 Parliamentarians of the Ruling Congress Pany began a meeting with premier Narasimha Rao’s resolve to go ahead with a law seeking to delink religion from politics by convening a special session on Parliament

Rao, criticized by opponents for taking a soft stand against the pro Hindu Bhartiya Janata Pany (BJP), expressed his minority government’s determination to prevent misuse and abuse of religion for electoral gains and said if the requisite two third majority was not available to ensure pas sage of the constitution amendment bill, he would opt for amendment to the representation of people act to achieve his objective. The government’s twin bills seeking to separate religion from politics, were last week deferred in the Lok Sabha in absence of support from non BJP opposition parties which objected to certain provisions of the proposed bills. Addressing the valedictory meeting of the Congress-I party in Parliament, Rao said “if the government can get the support of members required for constitutional amendment, it would go in for such an amendment, Otherwise it would opt for an amendment to the representation of people act to achieve the same objective of delinking religion from politics,”
