ATWATER: Lakhvir “Lucky” Chima is a 21 year old UC Santa Barbara student, who has every intention of living up to his nick name.
For several years, this young man has suffered from disease known as neuro fetromotos is. The ailment has left him with poor eyesight and hearing; impaired balance and reoccur rant tumors on his spine and intertwined in his brain. Although the illness has affected him physically his spent is indomitable.
This summer, he is oneof40 UC Santa Barbara Students to intern in Washington, D.C. for California representatives. Chima, a member of the University’s Legislative Council, left recently to begin his eight week internship for Gary Condit, Decrees.
Chima, who received a $3,000 scholarship to help with the ‘paid internship expenses, will and his Capitol jaunt learning politics works, The job may the deciding factor when Chima ctums to California and decides if he will pursue a double major or look further into politics, he said. Whatever his decision, the 1990 Alwaler graduate wants to return lo the area to. do what he can for the people.
“I want to give back to this community and my family and to the people here, I want to give them the same chances Thad,” he said.
Chima believes he is proof the American dream is alive, But it takes hard work, he said. He hopes to help people reach their goals through political work, teaching or possibly counseling.
Lakhvir Singh Chima is obviously no ordinary person. The extra Ordinary thing about this young Sikh youth ts that he has achieved this distinction in spite of his severe limitations. He has always gotten a good grades and got numerous scholarships. At the end of the high school graduation from Avwater in 1990, he received the highest grant of $36,000 from Bioss Scholarship for a four year University degree besides scholarships for Journalism from the Modesto Bee and Academic Decathlons certificates and California certificates.
By God’s grace and his parents love and support he has overcome the challenges of this disease. He is a living example of how great faith can make someone good into SOMEONE great.
