LOS ANGELES, CA: On July 1,1992, Immigration Court heard and granted asylum to Surinder Singh Gill, Advocate of Patti. He is 38 years old was married in Patti. He came to Los Angeles on Jan.10,1992 and was placed in exclusion.
Surinder Singh Gill claimed, among many claims, a well founded persecution due to his close association with Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindrawale and the Great Martyr Bhai Amrik Singh Ji.
The following testimony was elicited from the Applicant during the direct examination He was General Secretary of Akali Dal Unit of his district since 1976 and actively worked for cause of free, independent and sovereign Sikh state. He has defended hundreds of innocent Sikhs who were falsely implicated by police in false cases. He was among the team of defence counsels of Sant Bhindrawale in Lala murder case He also appeared before Justice Pattar Commission and Justice Gumam Singh Commission. He appeared on these Commissions and represented the Sikhs free of charge due to his sense of loyalty to his nation. He testified about 7 arrests and detentions. The Judge was particularly interested in his Jodhpur detention, Counsel likened this detention to Siberia in Russia for political detainees, As to all the arrests he testified about being tormented to deter him from representing the rights of the Sikhs. Entered into evidence were photos of Applicant with Sant Bhindrawale, Harminder Singh Sandhu, Sardar Simranjit Singh Maan, Bhai Manjit Singh, Baba Joginder Singh and Bibi Birnal Kaur Khalsa. He organized many rallies and religious training camp. He produced big posters issued by him for his party. In 1991, his car was fired upon by police cats last November 30. Though he was highly qualified to practice law before the courts of India for his Sikh brethren, he had to leave due to the treatment and attitude of India Government and police. There was 26 exhibits with subdivisions in all.
The Honorable Judge, Nathan W. Gordon stated in his decision that Gill was candid and truthful in his testimony and satisfied both the subjective and the objective requirements to be granted asylum, At the ume of conclusion of hearing on merits, government attorney told the court that Immigration Service waives its right to appeal and that made the order of court final.
