PATNA: A top Indian mathematician Dr. Vashisth Narain Singh who had been missing since 1989 has been located last week begging for his food at Chapra town. Dr,Singh who at one time taught at Columbia Institute of Mathematics and later at Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research at Bombay was driven to insanity by disturbed marital life and frustrations of career. His brother was taking him to a hospital in August 1989 when he disappeared from a railway coach and was never located all these years. But last week men from his village Basantpur identified him and members of Dr.Singh’s family brought him back. Dr.Singh’s talent was discovered by Prof J.L.Kelley of California University who visited Fatha in 1964, Dr.Singh was given a few sums and was asked to solve them. He did so by using four methods while only three methods were known to the U.S. professor by then. He was later taken to the U.S. for Certain assignments. Later he returned to India to face poor career Prospects and a disastrous married life. He was drive to insanity and begging for five years.
