DAVIS: The Sikh students at the University of California at Davis has formed a club on campus, Sikhs for Independent Khalistani Homeland (S.I.K.H.),
Parvinder jit Singh Athwal, a second year Presidential student majoring in genetics at the University said in the written press release that this club, as the name Suggests, strongly supports the inception of an Independent Homeland for the Sikh people. “The purpose of the club is to educate people (especially non-Sikhs) not only about the turbulence and present political situation back in Punjab (and all over India, for that matter) but also to educate people about our culture, tradition, religion, and history,” he said. Atwal further explained that “we also strive to achieve much more fraternity and brotherhood between the Sikhs and other minorities, such as Latin American, native American, African American, other Asian Americans and especially Hindustani American student on campus (something which the UCD campus has historically lacked), “We feel that if we carry through with out purpose, we can achieve a two-pronged goal; to. educate Sikhs about their own people, make them proud to be a Sikh and give other people a much better impression and understanding of Sikhs as a whole,” he said.
